Chickadee Chaps & Broads Third Annual Letterpress
Broadside Contest Winner
Ms. Stockwell's poem, "Bridle" was selected by Vermont Poet, Mary Ruefle.
Ms. Ruefle said, "I love this poem because in it we encounter a living, breathing voice, a unique and genuine freshness—it feels alive—and for how it employs language that is both "clutched and diffuse," the odd, intense, ravishing lyricism of the third stanza set against the scratchy, plain-spoken narrative of the rest. All of these things result in a poem of believable struggle, one the reader can respond to in an instant."
Ms. Ruefle also selected two finalists:
Tom Martin of Franklin, VT for his poem "Snowy Petals,"
Tamra Higgins of Jeffersonville, VT for her poem "She Stops to Help with Chores."
Both finalists will receive a copy of this year's winning broadside.
The semi-finalists (in alphabetical order) include: Regina Murray Brault's "Every Living Thing," Jeanne Cook's "Water Strider," Mary Elder Jacobsen's "Reflection," Sean Prentiss' "Between Night and Day," Julie Cadwallader Staub's "Midlife," Diana Whitney's "Panic Season," and Laura B. Wisniewski's "To My Love, Singing in His Blindness."
Samn Stockwell received five copies of her signed and numbered limited edition Broadside, handset and letterpress printed at May Day Studio, and illustrated by Vermont Arts Council award-winner Gabriel Tempesta. She has also scheduled her complimentary three-night stay at the Writer's Retreat in Craftsbury, Vermont, as part of CC&B's mission to nurture the work of Vermont Writers.
Ms. Stockwell's broadside will be on public display in the window of The Drawing Board in downtown Montpelier during the month of April as part of PoemCity's month-long poetry festivities. Copies will be available for purchase at the Drawing Board throughout April 2015 and online while supplies last at Chickadee Chaps & Broads' online store.
Ms. Stockwell is the author of two poetry collections, Theater of Animals, which won the National Poetry Series and Recital, winner of the Editor's Prize at Elixir. Her poems have also appeared in Agni, Rhino, The Three Penny Review and The New Yorker.
Samn Stockwell will give a reading from her winning broadside and other poems at Kellogg Hubbard Library in Montpelier on April 29, 2015 at 7 pm. The reading will also feature CC&B's debut Tapas-Lit Letterpress Chapbook authors, Ryan Walsh and Diane Swan.
